How I run a 6 figure business with 5 kids at home

Business Tips, Work Life Balance

With the recent pandemic all my kids were sent home. I have 5 kids from 4 years to 14 years old. Yes, that’s a lot of kids. Even with homeschooling my kids, I was able to grow my business during the pandemic. Here’s 5 tips for how I run a 6 figure business with 5 kids at home.

1- Own Your Morning

We’ve all been there. You’ve overslept, and you get woken up by your kids hitting you in the head. That’s no way to start your morning. You have to take control of your mornings. I am going to challenge you to get up, get dressed, and get ready all before your kids get up if possible. On my Instagram I have a 3 before 9 challenge. This is where I ask people to exercise, get dressed and ready, and meditate/read scriptures all before 9 am. Now, this is really going to set your day up for success. You’ll feel in control and ready for the day.

2- Know What You Are Good At, Outsource The Rest

I know what you’re thinking, “Michelle, there’s no way I can outsource yet.” I’ve gotta say, I’m not sure that’s true. Here’s the thing, there are some things that you are really good at. There are certain tasks that are in your genius zone. You are good at them, you love it. And there’s stuff that only you can do. I can’t outsource someone making a YouTube video. Now, how do you outsource things? I’ve got 4 women who are behind my business and working to help it run. Maybe you don’t have the money to do that yet, but there are options online that you can use to get tasks done.

A long time ago, I used to trade with a friend and she would help with my Instagram account in exchange for me doing her family photography once or twice a year. (I’ve had many businesses, here is a post all about my business journey!)

You can also teach a teenager or your child to run your email list, or perform another small task for you. My oldest son used to help me with my blog. He was 12 at the time and it was great. He got a new skill, earned some money, and I got some help!

If you are a bigger business and want some professionals helping you, my team does that. I help you with the strategy, and then we will take over your email marketing, your blogging, and your Pinterest. I know, it’s too good to be true! If you are interested, contact me. This is one of my favorite things I get to do in my business.

3- Create Systems

I create systems for my business and my kids. Do your kids know when they are going to be doing things throughout the day? Do they have to ask you when they can watch tv or have a snack? Set up a schedule for them so they know when they can expect to do things throughout the day.

For my business, I set up systems with my new clients or when someone emails me, what’s my calendaring and content system? Having those in place will help you to be more efficient and you’ll be able to outsource things more easily. Systems are very sexy. Really, though, systems are a big part of how I run a 6 figure business from home!

4- Set Aside Work Time Without Guilt

I know, it takes a little bit of time for you to admit that you’re really running a business. You need to own that you[‘re a business owner. It’s ok that you’re a business owner and a mother. It’s great and you can do both! And your kids will be great because of it. One of the things that I do when I have business time is that I protect it from myself, my kids, and other people. How do I do that? It’s tempting to use my business time to take care of household tasks, so I have to make a commitment to honor my business time and protect it.

5- Batch Your Content

This is a fabulous thing to do. If you are writing 4 blog posts in a month, one day you need to write all 4 blog posts, the next day, you will create graphics for them, the next day, you will schedule them all. (Here is a post I wrote all about how to batch your blog content!) This will save you time in the preparation (if you’re filming YouTube videos, you won’t have to get the equipment out multiple times), and it will save you time in your brain. You won’t have to waste time getting in the zone. If you can batch your content you can get in the zone and do it quickly. You will be ahead of the game and you will free up time to be with your kids or grow your business.

Bonus Tip for how I run a 6 figure business:

If you want to run a business and raise kids, I’ve got one more tip for you. Are you ready?  You need to lower your expectations. The key to happiness is low expectations.

It’s not that I don’t expect my kids to be awesome and behave well. It doesn’t mean that I don’t expect my business to grow and to serve in the best way. But I lower my expectations for perfection. I’m not really shocked if my kids interrupt me when I’m videoing. Or when I’ve got a huge pile of laundry waiting for me. Or even when I only get 20 minutes out of my 2 hours I’ve blocked off for work time. When you are growing a business you have to know this isn’t going to be perfect. Keep those expectations low and your spirits high!
