I’ve got 4 easy steps for you today to show you how to get what you want in business and in life. Listen, I want you to get what you want. Really. I think you were put here for a reason and you have many great gifts to share. Let’s talk about what you want and how to get it.
In case you’re new here, I have a coaching group, Money Makers (use code Michelle10 at checkout to join for $29/mo.) This past week we are talking about creating a vision for their business and in life. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write down everything you want to accomplish in your biz and life.
This is a brainstorm list. Just write it all down. Don’t second guess. Write down all the things that you want in this world. I have a healthy dose of both big dreams and reality dreams on my list.
One of the things on my list is that I want a professional kettle corn maker. I know, it’s so strange, but I really do love kettle corn! I love real kettle corn, made by pros. So my husband and I were talking about popcorn the other day and then afterward, he surprised me by telling me that he had found a professional kettle corn maker! And he wanted to buy it for me. He’s the best! I’m so excited I can hardly stand it. I’ll share how it goes on my Instagram stories when I get the kettle corn maker home.
So, what does this have to do with how to get what you want?
Get What You Want in Business & Life
1-Be very clear on your goals
We can spend a lot of time apologizing for what we want. I know that a kettle corn machine isn’t a necessity, although I will be throwing some amazing parties when the pandemic is over! But, it’s ok to dream about fun things. Don’t forget that.
I have serious dreams, too. Dreams that will take me years to accomplish. If you don’t know what you want and you aren’t clear about what you really want, it will be hard for you to get what you want.
I’m challenging you to do the 10 minute exercise I talked about earlier and just write it all out. Write out all of the things that you want. There will be a mix of serious and fun things. The biggest factor in how to get what you want in business and life, is claiming your goals.
I’d like to say that a goal well stated is half accomplished. You need to put it out there and claim your dreams and goals. Even the ones that you might not have ever stated out loud before.
2-Change your question from “Should I?” to “How can I?”
Change the conversation in your brain from, “Should I try to go for this goal and dream?” To, “I’m going for this goal and dream, now how can I accomplish it?”
About a year ago I was driving down a street by my house and there was a house for sale and my husband told me to just go in and take a look at it. We weren’t looking for a new home or looking to move. I thought the house was great, but I wasn’t looking for a new home. As I was walking home, the Spirit spoke to me and told me that I should buy that house.
My husband thought I was a little crazy at first, but it just felt right. I called a realtor friend and asked her what the possibilities of me buying this house were. She said it was possible, but I’d need to put my house on the market in 3 days. Eeek.
Shifting My Thinking
I had to quickly shift my thinking from, “Should I look into buying this house?” to “How can I buy this house? How can I make this work?”. Those were 3 busy days! Somehow we got it all ready and got it on the market in 3 days. And were able to sell it and buy the new house soon after.
We waste so much of our time thinking about whether we should do something. And we waste too much time debating on the merits of which decision is right and what people will think of our decisions.
“We need to stop spending so much of our time trying to make the right decisions and instead start spending our time making decisions and then making them right.”
Once you make a decision and you stop saying should, and you start saying how can I, you move from thought into action. Take action on your dreams and goals. It can happen by just changing that one little word! Change should to how and watch your goals happen.
3-Be bold in your ask
We’ve asked our question and we are now committed to doing it. We need to be bold about asking the question in the first place. This is a concept I learned from Steve Jobs. There are so many instances and quotes of him being bold in his ask.
One story I love happened when he was 12 years old and he was in a computer club. He was building a computer and he was missing one part. He looked in the phonebook and called Bill Hewlett, the CEO of Hewlett Packard on his home line. Can you believe that? That’s pretty bold!
Steve went on to ask him to help him find the part he was missing for his computer. Bill was tickled that a 12 year old had asked something like that of him, so he said he would help him get the part he needed. The best part is that after Bill Hewlett agreed to send Steve the part he was missing, Steve asked him for a summer job! And he was hired! How awesome is that. That is what is called being bold in your ask. That is how to get what you want in business. If you want something, ask for it and be relentless in that.
4-Commit To Boil
I’ve been spending a lot of time with my kids because of quarantine. We’ve been teaching them how to cook, in fact they’ve started a youtube channel teaching other kids how to cook. Check it out here.
One of the things they’ve been frustrated by is the time it takes for water to boil when they are cooking. To a kid, it seems like it takes forever for water to boil. (FYI water boils at 212º F or 100º C) If you turn off the stove before the water hits those temps, the water will never boil.
If you are too early on giving up, you will have missed the boiling point. This happens a lot in our business and in our personal lives. We exercise for 10 days and give up, right? If we would have kept going and gotten over the tipping point, we would have seen the results we want. We would have seen the water boiling, so to speak.
Now You Know How to Get What You Want in Business & Life
As you are being clear on your goals, changing your questions from should to how, being bold in your ask, you’ve got to be relentless. It’s hottest right before the water boils, right? The climb is the hardest right before you reach the top of the mountain. It’s going to be hard. Don’t expect that to not hold true for you. We have to keep going and get past the boiling point.
What you really want is important, and good. What you want will help you, your family, your community. As you succeed and continue on, their lives get better, too. Remember, that is how to get what you want in business and in life.
I’d like to invite you once more to join my coaching group. I know this is a rough time right now. Committing to your business is not easy. Showing up every day is not easy. I’m committed to boil, though!
