Friends! Can you believe it has been a year since I started the Maskcara Experiment? Yikes! When I announced that I was going to join an MLM and try things differently, I received a lot of support. Maybe this support came because you thought I wouldn’t last or maybe it came because I promised that I wouldn’t force you to buy anything. Either way, I’m so thankful for all of you who have cheered me on.
Let’s first review the rules for the Maskcara Experiment and if I stuck to them. Then we will go over the results and then talk about new goals.
Maskcara Experiment Rules:
-Never host a party
-Never start a Facebook group
-Never recruit friends to become a seller
-All team members will be trained in business
You know me, I’m a rule follower. I stuck to these rules and had some really awesome results.
My Maskcara Stats
Maskcara Artist Rank: Ambassador
Number of Artists on my team: 38
Months we hit top recruiting: 3
Months we hit top sales: 1
How did we do this without hosting parties or Facebook groups?
I teamed up with my sister-in-law JoEllen (visit her blog here and watch her travel the world). She has been blogging over at our Maskcara Beauty Girl site.
We have really honed in on Google and Pinterest and relied on our email marketing plan. You can read more about it in this blog post.
Our current stats for our Maskcara Beauty Girl blog:
75%-80% traffic comes from Google and Pinterest
Sell $1,500-$3,200 makeup every month
Our take home: $1,200-$2,000
Did we reach our goals?
You bet we did. Our goal was to have a successful business that was completely run online using Pinterest, Google and email marketing and it is. I was trying to decide if I share with you our actual numbers, because I don’t know how you will respond. But, I promised to be honest, so honest I will be. Maybe you think that we should be making more money or maybe you are shocked by how much we make, either way that’s what it is and we are beyond grateful for our success.
Things that held us back
Me. Really. I think I have been the one that has held our business back. With as many artists as we have, we should be making a lot more money. We have a low percentage of artists that are active each month. I think a large part is that there is such a steep learning curve to setting up a business online. Because I’ve been doing this for the last eleven years, it comes very natural to me, but people just starting need more coaching.
Also, I have to admit that sometimes I am still embarrassed about being a part of an MLM. That is silly and I know it. Maskcara makeup is awesome. I use it every day and the company is amazing. I feel like Maskcara is helping to break the MLM stigma, but there is a little bit of pride that I’m working on.
Goals for this year
-Continue the upward trend. Every month we have consistently increased our sales. This is coming because we are consistently adding content to our blog.
-Better train our current artists. (Increase our monthly active users from 25%-75%)
-Embrace being a Maskcara artist
-Triple our monthly take home
If you are just learning about Maskcara, we would love to have you try it. You can take our 2 minute color match quiz to get started and we will be with you every step of the way from choosing your colors to teaching you how to use the makeup. Click here to take our quiz.

When I started this experiment last year, I did’t know how it would turn out. Turns out that I am pleasantly surprised. On the original post someone left me this comment: “This is such a fabulous idea! I can’t wait to follow along and see your results. Statistically, 95% of MLM businesses fail and I’d definitely love to see them take a different approach to marketing and selling.”
Well, to you dear reader, it feels good to be a part of the 5% and I’m hoping to help make that percentage bigger by helping more people this year do an MLM the right way.
