Do you have an email list but aren’t sure how to use it? Having an email list is one of the most powerful tools you can use to nurture your audience and grow your brand–if you know how to use it. Email marketing can seem overwhelming and time-consuming, but it doesn’t have to be–and the payback is so good! If you’re ready to get serious about your email marketing, here are 6 tips to help you make more money with your email list.
I had the amazing opportunity to chat with my friend Stephanie from Six Sisters Stuff and Start-Up Spark where she shares her tips on email marketing. I feel like she is one of the OGs of email marketing and blogging, so she definitely knows what she’s talking about! Between her and I, we may have gotten way too excited about email marketing…but then again it deserves the excitement if it’s going to help grow your business, right?!
Both Stepanie and I love helping small business owners. Mostly because we didn’t have anyone helping us when we first started our own businesses (over 10 years ago). If you find a business coach to help you out, or at least join some type of coaching community, you will save SO much time and money. Anyway, let’s get back on track. This post is just a sneak peek of all the goodness you can get from a business coach–email marketing edition. Let’s get started!
What is Email Marketing?
Email marketing is basically gathering the emails of your audience members and compiling a list so you can regularly communicate with them. Having an email list allows you to form a community that you own (unlike social media followers) and nurture and serve them as often as you want.
It’s important to note that you cannot create and host an email list on your Gmail (or another email platform). There are tons of different email marketing platforms that you can choose from when setting up your own email list. I personally use Davinci for my email marketing system, and I love it!
Check out this post here to find out the other email marketing systems I recommend. The best system will be different for everyone because it should be based on your budget and what will work best with the type of services your business offers. So, there isn’t one best email marketing system for every business–just find the one that works best for you.
How to Get Started with Email Marketing
Once you choose your email marketing system, set up an account. The next thing you’ll want to do is create an opt-in link, so people can join your email list. An opt-in is usually something you want to give to your audience for free and they get it by signing up for your email. Click here to get some ideas for opt-in links.
Once you have people join your email list, start emailing them regularly (at least once a week). Do yourself a favor and sit down for an hour and batch a month’s worth of emails and schedule them out ahead of time. Click here for tips on how to craft the perfect email.
Once you feel comfortable with that routine, sweeten the deal for your email subscribers. Think of more valuable content and products that your audience will love (you can do this by noticing the level of engagement you are getting on certain topics you talk about) and adjust your opt-in links accordingly to gain even more subscribers.
6 Tips to Help You Make More Money with Your Email List
Alright, now that we’ve covered the basics of what email marketing is and how to set up your email list, it’s time to talk about the amazing 6 tips to help you make more money with your email list. As I mentioned earlier, Stephanie knows so much about email marketing and really believes in how effective it can be in growing your business–and I echo everything she mentions 100 percent!
Email Marketing Tip #1: Pay more attention to it.
One of the biggest mistakes people make with their email list is not paying enough attention to it. We’ve heard over and over again how people underestimate the value of an email list. It is actually really effective and sometimes more effective than your social media influence! Plus, it’s just another way for you to serve people and generate your income which is the whole point of your business. How could you say no to that?
So, if you do not have an email list, start one today. And start creating an email sequence that you could send to your audience once you have one. These emails can be really valuable and interesting for your subscribers, and so many will love what you have to say and offer if you put the time into nurturing it, especially at the beginning!
Email Marketing Tip #2: Regularly nurture your email list.
The other biggest mistake small business owners often make with email marketing is thinking once they have an email list, it will automatically become profitable. While your email marketing can get to this point, it is not going to happen before you put a little care and effort into it.
You need to nurture your email list and show up for them, just like you do for your social media followers. This looks like you emailing them regularly and writing really valuable content for them to read. The email does not have to be long, but it does need to be worth their time to read. Click here for tips on how to make your emails valuable for your readers.
Email Marketing Tip #3: Always include one clear call to action.
Always end your emails with ONE call to action. No more, no less. Having just one specific call to action will make it really clear to your reader what you want them to do next. It also matters how you word your call to action. For instance, which call to action are you more likely to click on?
“If you want, you can try out this product if you think it’ll work out for you.” vs. “Don’t miss out! Buy this product NOW to make your life easier!”
A lot of times, business owners are afraid to be blunt and straightforward about telling people to buy their products. But, this is the best way to say it! If you are truly confident in your products and how they will help solve people’s problems, you will not come off as a pushy salesperson, but rather as a friend who genuinely cares about them and wants to help solve their problems.
Just remember, if you aren’t going to tell people what to do, they aren’t going to do anything. And by the way, while your call to action can often be for them to purchase your products, there are other calls to action you can invite your readers to do too. Click here for other call to action ideas.
Email Marketing Tip #4: Talk about your products more than you feel comfortable with.
As a small business owner, you probably feel like you are talking about your business and products ALL. THE. TIME. But the truth is, you’re probably not talking about it enough! I know, it sounds crazy. But if you think about it, it’s such a small percentage of people who actively follow your content and your product line, so lots of time people will not know about your new products or launches you are doing.
The best advice we can give is to talk about your products more than you feel comfortable with. This is especially important if you are doing a new product launch! Stephanie said she and her sisters recently did a huge launch and she felt like they were talking about it way too much (multiple times a day every day on multiple platforms) and their business coach said they didn’t talk about it enough. Wow! So, talk about what you offer and talk about it some more!
Email Marketing Tip #5: Automate your emails as soon as you can.
We know it can sound completely overwhelming to start an email list. Especially on top of showing up on social media every day, creating and selling products, blogging, etc. But one of the best things about email marketing is that you do not have to show up for it every single day like you have to do with the other aspects of your business.
Once you set up your email marketing campaign, you can batch your emails and schedule them weeks in advance. Once all of your content is created for this, all you will have to do is maintain it every once in a while! Email marketing really is one of the best secret weapons of a successful business.
Email Marketing Tip #6: Make sure you totally believe in the products you are selling and how they will solve people’s problems.
We saved the most important email marketing tip for last! This one is the most powerful because it not only applies to your email marketing, but to your entire business. If you take the time to do some mental work about yourself as a business owner and why you do what you do, you will be able to naturally and confidently sell your products in a way that always comes off helpful and most often successful. (Referring back to tip #3.)
The whole point of your business is to serve your people and make money while doing it. Both of these things are good and honorable. We know you are an amazing business owner who will accomplish great things, but it only matters if YOU believe this about yourself! We are here for you and cheering you on every step of the way.
