affiliate marketing how to start with affiliate marketing What Is Affiliate Marketing? (And Why It’s the Smartest First Step for Small Creators)

You’ve been showing up. Posting your outfits, your home finds, your skincare routine. People are clicking. People are asking, “Where is that from?” And somewhere in the back of your mind you’re thinking — shouldn’t I be getting paid for this?

Yes. You should. And affiliate marketing is how you start.

Let’s cut through all the affiliate marketing noise:

Affiliate marketing is simple: you share a product, someone buys it through your link, and you earn a commission. No inventory. No shipping. No customer service headaches. You recommend something you already love, and the brand pays you a percentage of the sale as a thank you for sending them a customer.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

I’ve spent 8 years building creator brands from the ground up, and I’ll tell you right now — affiliate marketing is the foundation. It’s not the flashiest revenue stream, but it’s the one that works while you sleep.

How does affiliate marketing actually work?

When you join an affiliate platform — think ShopMy, LTK, Amazon Associates, or Mavely — you get a unique tracking link for every product you share. That link has your name on it, digitally speaking. When someone clicks it and buys, the platform records the sale and assigns the commission to you.

No guesswork. No chasing brands for payment. The technology handles it.

Your job is to show up, share products you genuinely use, and drive people to click. That’s the whole business model at this stage.

Why this matters for small creators

Here’s what nobody tells you when you’re starting out: you don’t need 100K followers to make real money from affiliate marketing.

I’ve watched creators with 3,000 highly engaged followers outperform influencers with 50K ghost followers every single time. Engagement beats reach. Trust beats numbers. And affiliate marketing rewards both.

Your audience follows you because they trust your taste. Every time you share a link and someone buys through it, you’re proving that trust has real value. That’s not just income — that’s leverage. That’s the thing that eventually gets brands knocking on your door.

The platforms you need to know

Not all affiliate platforms are created equal. Here’s the honest breakdown after 8 years of using them all.

ShopMy

ShopMy is where I tell every beginner to start. No follower minimum, commissions up to 30%, and weekly payouts every Friday via PayPal or Stripe. You can link almost anything — even if a brand isn’t officially on the platform yet, you can add your own affiliate link so you never miss a commission. The built-in gifting system means brands can send you PR directly through the platform, and a tiered rewards program pays you cash bonuses as you grow. It’s the most creator-friendly platform out there right now, and it’s not slowing down.

At a glance:

  • Follower minimum: None
  • Commission: 10–30%
  • Payout: Weekly (Fridays) via PayPal or Stripe
  • Best for: Beauty, lifestyle, wellness, and brand-forward content

And, if you use a referral link, you are more likely to get approved. Here’s my link: ShopMY

LTK (LikeToKnow.it)

LTK is the OG and it still pulls serious weight — especially for fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. It has a built-in shopping app with 40 million active shoppers already browsing creator content every month. The application process is more selective — they want to see at least four months of consistent, shoppable content before they’ll approve you — but once you’re in, the discovery potential is real. Commissions run 10–30% depending on the retailer, access to over 7,000 brands, and payouts every two weeks once you’ve crossed the $25 minimum threshold.

At a glance:

  • Follower minimum: No hard number, but 4+ months of consistent content required
  • Commission: 10–30%
  • Payout: Biweekly, $25 minimum
  • Best for: Fashion, home decor, styled content, capsule wardrobes

Amazon Associates

Amazon Associates is the entry-level Amazon program and one of the most accessible affiliate programs on the internet. No follower requirement. No application review process. You just need an active website, blog, YouTube channel, or social account and you’re in. You get a unique link for any product on Amazon, share it, and earn commission when people buy. Commissions run 1–10% depending on the product category.

Here’s the part that makes Amazon worth every creator’s time: you earn commission on the customer’s entire cart — not just the product you linked.

You send someone to Amazon with a link to a $25 face wash. While they’re there, they add a $200 air fryer, a $60 book, and a $40 kids’ toy. You get a commission on all of it. Every single item. Because you’re the one who opened the door.

Amazon places a 24-hour cookie on their browser the moment they click your link — any purchase made within that window is credited to you. And if they add something to their cart within 24 hours, you have up to 90 days for that item to convert and still earn your commission.

That’s why creators who write Amazon off because the commission rate looks low are leaving serious money on the table.

At a glance:

  • Follower minimum: None
  • Commission: 1–10% on the full cart value
  • Cookie window: 24 hours (90 days if added to cart)
  • Payout: ~60 days after the month earned, $10 minimum (direct deposit)
  • Best for: Everyday finds, home, tech, kitchen, gift guides

Amazon Influencer Program

The Amazon Influencer Program is Amazon Associates’ more powerful older sibling — and the main difference is that it’s built for social-first creators. Instead of just dropping individual product links in a blog or bio, you get your own custom Amazon storefront with a vanity URL you can send people to directly. Think amazon.com/shop/yourname. You curate product collections, your followers can browse everything you love in one place, and you still earn commission on the full cart — same as Associates.

The bigger unlock is shoppable video. Once approved, you can upload product review videos that appear directly on Amazon product pages. That means someone who has never heard of you is already on Amazon, already looking at a product you reviewed, and your face shows up selling it. That’s commission you’re earning from Amazon’s own traffic — no post required that day.

The catch: the application is more selective. Amazon evaluates your social presence on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook, and engagement matters more than follower count. After initial approval, you still have to pass a video review — three shoppable videos that meet Amazon’s guidelines, with only three attempts to get it right. It takes a little more setup, but the passive income potential once you’re in makes it worth the effort.

At a glance:

  • Follower minimum: No hard number, but ~1,000+ engaged followers recommended
  • Commission: 1–20% on the full cart value
  • Requires: Passing a 3-video review after acceptance (3 attempts only)
  • Payout: Monthly
  • Best for: Social-first creators who share Amazon hauls, product reviews, and everyday finds

Mavely

Mavely is the underdog that deserves more attention. No big follower requirement, commissions up to 30% through their SmartLinks, and they genuinely prioritize quality creators over vanity metrics. It’s clean, simple, and a solid addition to your affiliate stack — especially if you’re sharing everyday lifestyle finds and want a platform that doesn’t make you jump through hoops to get started.

At a glance:

  • Follower minimum: None
  • Commission: Up to 30% via SmartLinks
  • Cookie window: 24 hours
  • Best for: Lifestyle creators who want a simple, low-friction platform to add to the mix

How to stack these platforms like a pro

Here’s how I think about the lineup after 8 years of doing this:

Use ShopMy for beauty, lifestyle, wellness, and any brand with a higher commission rate. It’s your primary storefront and the place to build direct brand relationships through the platform’s built-in collaboration tools.

Use LTK for fashion, home decor, and styled content. The built-in shopping app means your audience can browse and buy without ever leaving the platform — and the discovery feature puts your content in front of shoppers who aren’t even following you yet.

Use Amazon for everything everyday. Kitchen finds, organization, tech gadgets, skincare basics. Remember — you’re not just earning on the thing you link. You’re opening a door to their entire cart. Set up your Influencer storefront, upload video reviews, and let Amazon’s own traffic work for you.

Use Mavely to fill in the gaps. It works especially well for lifestyle and everyday content, and the SmartLinks make it dead simple to share. Think of it as a clean, low-friction addition to what you’re already building.

You don’t have to choose. You use each one where it performs best and build a system that earns across all of them.

What you actually earn

Let’s be real about the numbers.

If you share a $100 handbag through ShopMy at 20% commission, you earn $20. If 10 people buy it, that’s $200 from one post.

If you link a $25 Amazon skincare product and your follower buys that plus $150 worth of other stuff while they’re there, you’re earning commission on the full $175 — not just the $25 item that got them there. At even a 4% blended rate, that’s $7 from one click. Scale that across dozens of clicks a day and it adds up faster than most people expect.

The creators who make serious affiliate income aren’t doing anything magic. They’re consistent. They’re strategic. They’re recommending products their specific audience actually wants, not just whatever brand slid into their DMs.

That’s a skill. And like any skill, it gets sharper the more you practice it.

The one thing I want you to take away

You are already doing the hardest part. You’re creating. You’re building trust. You’re showing up even when the algorithm is working against you.

Affiliate marketing is just attaching a revenue stream to the work you’re already doing.

Stop leaving money on the table. Get your links set up, start sharing with intention, and let the platforms do the tracking while you focus on the content.

You’ve already built something people want to follow. Now let’s make it pay you.
