Are you thinking about starting a podcast but the idea seems overwhelming? It can be a lot to commit to, especially if you’re already deep into figuring out social media marketing, email lists, etc. But what about guest podcasting? This is a great option if you don’t feel ready to start your own podcast but want to spread your brand to the podcast community. Here are the best guest podcasting secrets that will increase your sales.
These guest podcast secrets come from my podcast coach, Dustin Riechmann. I met Dustin about a year ago when I took his mastermind. Dustin teaches a podcast accelerator group how to get on podcasts and use them to generate a lot of income for your business. He and his business have a halting origin story, so check out my podcast episode posted just above this paragraph to hear how he came to be!
Guest Podcasting Secrets That Will Increase Your Sales
One of the key parts of Dustin’s guest podcast strategy is developing a relationship with the host, their audience, and other guests who may not have heard of you yet. You may get direct sales from sharing your product on these podcasts which is a great thing to have happen. (This is what happened to Dustin and he took that theory and built a booming biz with it.) Another bonus is how you get to plant seeds with the host and their audience that may end up in a collaboration down the road.
Having and making business friendships online is actually so rewarding because you can help each other. In fact, most business success is because of the relationships you’ve built. Have you noticed that? Along with creating business relationships, there is, of course, the strategy behind these guest podcasting secrets. Dustin refers to it as his “5 P Framework.”
Dustin’s 5 P Framework for Guest Podcasting
P #1: Purpose
The first step is knowing your purpose. You should be able to clearly articulate and answer why you want to be a guest on a podcast. And it’s as simple as saying you want to be on “x” podcast to sell “x” product.
P #2: Plan
Once your purpose is clear, it’s time to make your plan. This is where you determine which podcast shows you want to be on. Research podcasts that will have your same target audience and where it makes sense to sell your product to those audiences. (Make sure you’re not pitching to be on a podcast that is a competitor and your products are too similar.)
P #3: Pitch
Now that you have your list of shows you want to guest on, it’s time to make your pitch to the podcast host. There are times when you can be referred to be on a show, but Dustin would say 90 percent of the time most interview-based shows are finding their guests on their own.
Your written pitch is your chance to compel the host that you can add value to their audience. If you have no idea how to write a persuasive pitch, Dustin can help there. His template gets about a 60-80 percent acceptance rate even with it being a “cold outreach” because it’s not done in a cold way. Check out his course HERE to find out his secrets that will get you to be a guest on your dream podcasts.
P #4: Perform
This performance step comes into play once the host gives you the yes to be on their show. This is where you decide how you want to show up, what stories to share, your call to action, and ultimately how you can give maximum value to the audience.
P #5: Profit
This is where it gets exciting! In Dustin’s accelerator group, this step makes up about 80 percent of the training. Dustin gets straight to the point with steps 1-4, so you can focus on increasing your profit for the rest of the course. The first four steps give you the template on how to find and get on a podcast show, and this last step is how you can duplicate this process and translate it for various podcasts and audiences. These are the true guest podcasting secrets that will increase your sales.
How to Find Relevant Touchpoints as a Guest Podcaster
If you find podcast shows that match your target audience, finding relevant touchpoints will be easier for you. Think about what’s going on in the world and what your target audience would know references to. Try to include those in what you prepare to share on the show. Including these touchpoints will help you be more relatable and connect with the host and their audience.
Something to be aware of here is to not go on a podcast where the host sells a similar product as you. It would be awkward if you were trying to sell a product to their audience that they already sell to them. So, instead of hitting your target podcasts right on the bullseye, look a little left and to the right of it and you’ll find some that will work with your content and product.
You are looking for a win-win-win situation where you get a win for guesting on a podcast, the host gets a win by bringing on an amazing guest who added value to the audience, and the listeners get a win because they leave feeling full of new knowledge that will help them reach their goals.
