If you’re running a business you’ve most definitely heard to have an email list. But how do you set one up? And how do you keep track of it? If you’ve been following me for a while you know how important an email list is. If you’re new, welcome! An email list is a must-have for your business because it is a place you own where you can regularly communicate with your audience. If you’re only using social media to grow your business, the reality is you are borrowing other people’s audiences. But with an email list, those people who are subscribed to you are there for you and no one else. That is a really powerful tool when it comes to selling products and cultivating a community!
Also, the conversion rate of emails is actually much higher than social media. This makes sense because there is less competition on your email than there is on social media. It’s easier for people to stay committed to opening and reading your emails than to stop scrolling and watch your video (if you even get the chance for your video to pop up in their feed).
How to Create a Killer First Email Sequence
You can create a really personal relationship with the people on your email list which will make it easier for you to sell your products to them. Plus, you can automate your email! So you can set up your email sequence once and it’ll be like you’re making money without you ever having to think about it. It’s the best thing! I can go on and on about all the reasons why you need an email list, but I know you’re here to learn how to create a killer first email sequence! So, let’s jump into the steps.
Email Sequence Step #1: Use Flodesk
If you’re just starting out with an email list, I recommend using Flodesk. Flodesk is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most beautiful email marketing systems out there. Use this link to get 50% off!
You will start on Flodesk to create a form that your audience can fill out. It has a Forms tab you can click on and browse through to find which type of form you want to use. Once you find a form you like you can customize it with an image, the words in the form, the color, and what’s required for your audience to fill out in order to receive the freebie.
Email Sequence Step #2: Create an Email Opt-in
An email opt-in is something you offer to your audience for free in exchange for them signing up for your email list. They sign up by filling out the form on your website and then they will have your freebie emailed to them. And now you have someone new added to your email list that you can regularly send emails.
I recommend creating your freebie document on Canva. This will make it super easy to get a link for your document that you can connect to Flodesk and then share with people. Make sure to check out my video above because it shows you how to do this step-by-step!
Email Sequence Step #3: Use Canva to Create Your Freebie
Usually, a freebie is some type of pdf document that gives your audience information related to your products. For example, if you own a plant shop you could create a freebie document with “5 Ways to Keep Your Plants Alive.” The idea is to provide something valuable to your audience but requires little effort for you to create since it is free.
Once you decide on what document you want to create for your audience, head to Canva and design it. Once it’s created, you will go to “Share” in the upper right-hand corner. Then, make sure to select a view-only link, so people cannot edit the link when they click on it.
Email Sequence Step #4: Paste the Link on Flodesk
If you’re following the guide on Flodesk after you’ve created your form, you should see a page that says, “After this form is submitted.” And you’ll have the option to either display a success message or redirect to a URL. Select “redirect to a URL” and then paste in your Canva link. (Again, make sure it is view-only.) Now, you should have your working link that takes people to your form, and once filled out will bring them to their freebie document!
Email Sequence Step #5: Set up Your Email Sequence on Workflows
Workflows is where you will set up your initial email sequence for those who subscribe to your email list. Flodesk already has a template set up for you, so all you have to do is customize it with what you want it to say and so it fits your brand.
This is where you also get to decide how often you want to send emails, what day of the week, and the time of day to send them. And there’s even an option to set up special emails to be sent out for holidays.
This process of setting up your email sequence is super simple! All you have to do is click and edit it. Flodesk is very user-friendly, especially for beginners, so you can easily set all of this up within an hour!
