Instagram Instants: How to Use Instagram’s Newest Feature for Your Business

Instagram Instants is the new disappearing photo feature inside DMs. Learn how to use Instagram Instants for your business and ride the authenticity wave. Instagram just dropped a brand-new feature called Instants, and most people are already using it wrong. I know what you’re thinking — Instagram releases something new every week. But this one is different, and it’s worth your attention.

Instagram Instants is a disappearing photo feature inside your DMs — think Snapchat or BeReal, but built right into the app. It launched in May 2026. Here’s the short version: Instants let you share raw, in-the-moment photos that vanish in 24 hours, and the smartest creators are using them to build deeper connection with their audience, not just post random selfies.

In this post, I’ll walk you through what Instants is, why Instagram built it, and how to use Instagram Instants strategically for your business — with real step-by-steps, not busywork.

Quick answer

Instagram Instants is a disappearing photo feature inside DMs, launched in May 2026. Photos last 24 hours, can’t be screenshotted, and can be viewed only once. For business, use Instants to share raw, behind-the-scenes moments with a curated close friends list — building deeper, more authentic connection with your ideal audience.

What Is Instagram Instants?

Instagram Instants is a disappearing photo feature that lives inside your direct messages. To find it, open your DMs and tap the little plus sign at the bottom — that’s where your Instants live.

Creating one is simple. The white button takes the photo, and you can flip the camera or toggle the flash first. Want to add text? You have to do it before you take the picture: long-hold at the bottom of the screen, type your words, then snap the photo. There’s no preview — once you tap the button, it sends.

Before anyone views it, you’ll see an “Undo” option at the bottom that pulls the photo back. To revisit your own past Instants, tap the four squares in the top right corner.

How Does Instagram Instants Work?

Instants borrow the best of Snapchat and BeReal, but in Meta’s style and baked straight into Instagram. Here are the rules to know:

  • Instants disappear after 24 hours.
  • Viewers can see each Instant only once — after that, it’s gone for them.
  • No one can screenshot or screen record your Instants.
  • There’s no preview before sending, so what you snap is what goes out.
  • You can undo an Instant — but only until someone has viewed it.

You choose who sees them: your “friends” (people you follow who follow you back) or a “close friends” list you build yourself.

Why Did Instagram Build Instants?

When Instagram introduces a completely new feature like this, it’s usually signaling something bigger. The signal here is clear: people want raw, unfiltered access to you.

Stories used to be that spontaneous space. But over time they’ve become more strategic and more curated — we plan them, we polish them, and views are down. That’s good for business, but it took away the in-the-moment connection Stories once had. Add the flood of AI content and more creators than ever, and the feed gets noisy fast.

Instants is Instagram’s way of bringing back casual, in-the-moment sharing — no production, no pressure, no overthinking. Just “here’s what I’m doing today.”

What Is the Authenticity Wave on Social Media?

The authenticity wave is the current shift on social media toward raw, unpolished, real content — and away from over-produced, heavily edited posts. People are craving it.

You can see it in the content that’s winning right now. Talking-head and “yapping” Reels filmed straight to camera are outperforming big studio productions. Less polished, less edited, more real connection is what’s trending.

So no matter what you create — an Instant, a Story, a Reel — ask yourself one question: how can I connect in a deeper, more human way? That mindset matters across the whole platform, not just in Instants.

How Do You Use Instagram Instants for Your Business?

Strategic doesn’t mean hard. You don’t need to plan Instants to death. But a little foresight goes a long way — because right now most people are just posting random pictures of themselves, and audiences will get bored fast without context.

Friends vs. Close Friends: Which Should You Use?

You have two audience options for Instants:

  • Friends — the list Instagram builds automatically of people you follow who follow you back.
  • Close Friends — a curated list you build yourself.

This is where the strategy lives. Instead of posting to everyone who follows you back, build a Close Friends list of your ideal audience — the people you most want to connect with, work with, or serve. If you run a coaching program or membership, make those members your Close Friends list so Instants become a VIP, behind-the-scenes experience.

To build your Close Friends list: go to your profile, tap the three lines in the top right, and under “Who can see your content” tap Close Friends. Add people one by one so that when you post an Instant, you already have that specific audience in mind.

Think of your content in layers: Reels and carousels are your top layer that reach everyone, Stories go a level deeper, and Instants are your deepest, most personal layer — perfect for a Close Friends VIP group.

4 Ways to Use Instagram Instants for Business

  1. Behind-the-scenes of your process. Show what you’re actually doing to build your business. I’ll snap an Instant with my hair done, then my camera with the caption “YouTube tutorial coming in hot” — letting people see how I run a business as a mom.
  2. Real, unfiltered moments. Share the honest stuff — a messy kitchen with “Going to work anyway.” It lets people know you better and quietly says, “you can do this too.”
  3. A quick question. Add a short line of text and ask your audience something to spark replies. Most viewers scroll Instants fast right now, but it’s worth testing.
  4. Exclusive content first. Share good news, wins, and sneak peeks on Instants before they hit your Stories or feed. People who want to be close to you will show up there to see what’s happening in real time.

Build a Series, Not Random Selfies

Three different selfies in a row don’t tell a story — they just fill space. Instead, post three Instants that form a sequence: a photo of you with your hair done, then you with your camera, then you editing the video. Now you’re showing a step-by-step of your day and inviting people in.

Don’t overthink it. Instants should be quick. A little intention beats a lot of planning.

Final Thoughts: Use Instants to Be Intentionally You

Here’s what most business owners are missing: we’re in the middle of an authenticity wave. In my agency and with my students, the people winning are the ones showing up and solving real, specific problems in the most authentic way.

Your audience wants to be talked to directly. They want their problem called out, in a way they can relate to and trust. Showing up as authentically and intentionally you is one of the biggest advantages you have on social media right now.

So before you post your next selfie Instant, pause and ask: can I add a little context? A little storytelling? Something that connects and gives people more of you?
