It is super common for people to repost someone else’s content on their own Instagram account. People do this for lots of reasons–they relate to it, think it is funny, enter a giveaway, etc. But if you’re new to the Instagram game, it’s completely normal not to know how to repost on Instagram. But this post is going to change that for you!
Once upon a time, Instagram users used to be able to repost someone else’s post onto their own Instagram feed. They could hit a repost button and a post would automatically generate as one of their own posts (but still give credit to the original creator).
As more users joined Instagram, Adam Mosseri wanted to make sure Instagram prioritized the creators who posted original content. With that being said, the repost feature was taken away. However, there is still a way to repost on Instagram–through your Instagram stories.
What is a Repost on Instagram?
An Instagram repost is when you share someone else’s post on your Instagram story. Usually, Instagram posts are a single photo post, a carousel post, or a reel. This is the type of content you would share on your Instagram story.
As mentioned earlier, Instagram no longer has the feature where you can repost someone else’s post on your own feed. You do, however, have the option to copy the post link, share it to another social platform, or add it to your Instagram story. You find these options by tapping the paper airplane icon underneath the post you want to share.
Step-by-Step Tutorial: How to Repost on Instagram
1- Find the post you want to share.
2- Tap the paper airplane icon at the bottom right of the post.
3- Select, “Add to story.”
Instagram Repost Pro Tips
Sometimes the “Add post to story” option does not pop up if the original creator’s account is private or if they have turned this feature off in their settings.
If you are reposting an influencer’s post, it will most likely be available to add to your stories. They appreciate when you do because it helps their content get seen by more people and potentially get them more followers.
When adding a post to your story, it’s best practice to tag the person who created the post. This gives credit where credit is due and the original creator will appreciate you supporting them and their content.
To tag the person on your story, tap on the text box and start typing their handle. It should pop up as one of the results. Once you tap on it, their handle will appear on your story and this will tag them once you publish your story.
