Instagram Updates June 2026: Botgate, Instants, and 7 Changes You Need to Know

Instagram Updates June 2026: Social media changes fast, and it’s hard to keep up. So consider this your shortcut: I read all the blogs and news articles so you don’t have to, and I’ve put the most important Instagram updates in one place.

In this June 2026 roundup, we’re covering the great bot purge people are calling Botgate, the brand-new disappearing photo feature called Instants, six other Instagram updates that affect what you post, and Target’s big partnership with LTK. Here’s everything you need to know — and what to actually do about it.

Quick answer

The biggest Instagram updates in June 2026: Instagram deleted millions of bot accounts overnight (“Botgate”), launched Instants — a disappearing photo feature — and rolled out six changes including per-slide carousel captions, a new originality policy, a 3:4 profile grid, editable comments, reorderable carousel slides, and algorithm controls. Separately, Target moved its creator program onto LTK. The through line: Instagram is done rewarding fake, and rewarding genuine, original, human content.

Instagram Update 1:

What Happened in the Instagram Bot Purge (“Botgate”)?

Sometime overnight between May 6th and 7th, Instagram ran what people are calling the great purge. Using a new AI moderation tool built to detect coordinated inauthentic behavior and click-farm activity, it deleted millions of bot, spam, and inactive accounts in a single wave — with no warning, which is one of the biggest problems with how it rolled out.

It didn’t discriminate. Cristiano Ronaldo, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Justin Bieber were all down by the millions. Kylie Jenner reportedly lost 14 million followers in an afternoon. People panicked, and the DMs and texts started flying.

Here’s the important part: this wasn’t just happening to people who bought followers. It happened to everyone, because bots auto-follow trending accounts. If your count dropped, you didn’t do anything wrong — you were just popular enough that bots latched on, and when Instagram swept, they got swept.

So reframe it: you didn’t lose your audience. You lost people who were never going to buy from you anyway, because they weren’t real. Your engagement rate will probably go up. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, addressed it in Stories the next day, admitting the rollout was probably a mistake and that Instagram should either clean up continuously in small batches or warn users first.

The lesson for content creators: followers matter less and less. What matters is whether you’re making content your audience actually wants to see and connect with. Focus on real connection, real engagement, and the real you.

Instagram Updates 2:

What Is Instagram Instants?

Check here for the full blog post about Instagram Instants.

Instants is Instagram’s new feature for sharing quick, unedited, disappearing photos with friends — it’s also a standalone app. Think Snapchat and BeReal had a baby in a Meta lab.

You capture a photo with the in-app camera (no camera-roll uploads, no editing beyond text), and friends can react or reply, with replies landing in your DMs. There’s no viewer list, and once someone views your Instant it disappears for them — but it lives in your personal archive for up to a year, so you can reshare it to your Story later.

Should you care as a business owner? Instants isn’t a growth feature — it’s friends and close friends only, with no discovery, algorithm, or public metrics. But neither are Stories. It still matters for two reasons: it’s more screen time Meta is locking up, so if your people are there, your face should be too; and unpolished, in-the-moment content is trending hard right now.

My take: yes, use it. It’s so easy you don’t have to plan — just capture moments throughout your day and let your audience get to know you with zero pressure. To find it, open your DMs and tap the bubbles in the bottom-right corner. You can’t screenshot or screen record Instants, and viewers only see them once. Add a caption before you take the photo, and use the quick “undo” if you need to pull one back before anyone views it. To turn it off, go to your profile → three lines → Settings → Content preferences → toggle on “Hide Instants in inbox.”

What 6 Other Instagram Updates Should You Know About?

1. Per-slide carousel captions (in testing)

Instagram is testing captions that change as you swipe through a carousel, instead of one caption for the whole post. A product slide could get its own product note; a chart slide could get its own explanation. It’s still in testing, so don’t build a strategy around it yet — but if it rolls out, carousels go from “photo dump with a paragraph” to a structured, swipeable mini-article. Start thinking slide by slide, and treat each one like a tiny blog post with keywords, because Instagram is a search engine and this gives you more places to put search terms.

2. New originality and repost policy

Accounts that mostly post reposts or aggregate other people’s content will no longer be recommended in feed and Explore to people who don’t already follow them. Think “best cat videos” or meme accounts that only repackage others’ content. You’re probably not one of these, so don’t worry — sharing a meme to your Stories is still fine. Your followers can still see your content; it just won’t get pushed to non-followers. If your engine was reposting viral stuff, that fuel is gone. Time to create your own.

3. New profile grid (3:4 ratio)

The profile grid is now taller — 3:4 instead of square. The catch: a lot of you post at 4:5, which gets slightly cropped top and bottom on the grid. Start exporting at 1080 x 1440 pixels (a 3:4 ratio) and it fills the grid with zero cropping. Small change, but it’s why your perfectly framed post can look off once you publish.

4. You can now edit comments

As of April 9th, you can edit comments — as many times as you want, but only within a 15-minute window, after which the option disappears. People can see that a comment was edited, but not your edit history. Right now it’s mobile-app only, so it won’t work on desktop.

5. Reorder carousel slides after posting

Rolled out around March 24th: no more deleting a whole carousel and losing your likes and comments because slide three should have been slide one. Open your published carousel, tap the three-dot menu, choose Edit, then long-press and drag a slide into its new position. Your likes, comments, and shares stay intact. Limitations: you can reorder and delete slides but can’t add new ones or swap a file, and the aspect ratio stays locked to your first slide. It’s a gradual rollout, so if you don’t have it yet, it’s coming.

6. Control your algorithm

This started on Reels back in December and just expanded to Explore. Open Reels or Explore, tap the icon in the top-right that looks like two little lines with hearts, and you can type in topics you want to see more or less of. On Explore you can also add or remove interests from the topic pillars at the top. Changes carry over between Reels and Explore because they now share one recommendation system.

Why should a strategist care about a viewer setting? Because it’s one of the cleanest research tools you’ve got. Curate your feed to your exact niche and your Explore page becomes a live competitive-research dashboard showing what’s working in your space right now. We’re not copying — we’re staying informed.

What Does the Target x LTK Partnership Mean for Creators?

The last big story isn’t an Instagram story — it’s an LTK one — but a big portion of my audience makes money through affiliate sales, so it matters. Target made one of the biggest creator-commerce moves of the year: it killed its old creator program and replaced it with two new ones, with LTK (Like To Know It) as the headline partner.

  • Club Target — for emerging creators and enthusiastic Target shoppers. This is the open door: US creators 18+ with at least 500 followers on Instagram or TikTok. It’s running as a pilot with thousands of creators and scaling over time, so it’s the one you can actually raise your hand for.
  • Target ambassadors, powered by LTK — for established creators, built directly inside the LTK platform. It’s invite-only with two levels including a premier tier, currently several hundred established LTK creators who post about Target regularly. You don’t apply; you earn your way in by consistently creating Target content on LTK and performing.

Expect higher commission rates, monthly bonuses, exclusive campaigns, and a multi-tier structure. The context: Target’s own data says 75% of US shoppers already buy through creator content. This isn’t experimental for them anymore — it’s the strategy.

Quick clarification, because the wording trips people up: this is a good thing for creators on LTK. Target moving onto LTK means more earning opportunities inside a platform you may already use — so opt in and position yourself, don’t move away from it. If Target is anywhere near your niche (home, fashion, beauty, parenting, dorm, budget hauls), get your LTK shop active, tag Target products consistently, and get into Club Target. That’s how you put yourself in the room for the ambassador tier.

What’s the Big Takeaway From These Instagram Updates?

Zoom out and there’s one through line in every change — Botgate, the originality update, Instants, the raw-and-unedited energy everywhere: Instagram is done rewarding fake. Fake followers, recycled content, and over-polished everything are all getting deprioritized.

The accounts that win this year and next are the ones that are genuinely original and genuinely human. So here’s your homework:

  1. Check your engagement rate now that the bots are gone — it should look healthier.
  2. Audit your content: is it actually original, or just well-curated reposts?
  3. Set up your algorithm so your Explore page works as a research tool for your niche.

FAQ Section (add to bottom of post — valid FAQPage schema still helps AI search visibility, even though Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026)

What is Botgate on Instagram?

Botgate is the nickname for Instagram’s overnight bot purge between May 6–7, 2026, when a new AI moderation tool deleted millions of bot, spam, and inactive accounts, causing follower counts to drop sharply across accounts of all sizes.

Why did my Instagram followers drop in May 2026?

Most likely because of the bot purge. Bots auto-follow trending accounts, so when Instagram removed them, many real creators lost followers too. It doesn’t mean you did anything wrong, and your engagement rate should improve.

What is Instagram Instants?

Instants is Instagram’s new disappearing photo feature for sharing quick, unedited photos with friends. They’re viewed once, can’t be screenshotted, and are archived for up to a year, but they’re not a growth feature.

How do I export Instagram posts for the new 3:4 grid?

Export your images at 1080 x 1440 pixels, which is a 3:4 ratio. This fills the new profile grid with zero cropping, unlike 4:5 posts that get trimmed top and bottom.

What is the Target x LTK partnership?

Target replaced its old creator program with two LTK-powered programs: Club Target for emerging creators (US, 18+, 500+ followers) and an invite-only Target ambassador tier for established LTK creators, offering higher commissions and bonuses.
