Three Steps on How to Stay Focused

Business Tips

2x Olympian and Motivational Speaker Noelle Pikus Pace shares her three steps on how to stay focused on completing goals despite surrounding distractions. I remember the moment when Noelle crossed the finish line and she knew she won the silver and she jumped into the crowd and hugged her family. It still makes me cry every time I watch it.

I’m so excited to interview Noelle because she is a mom of four and she knows the tricky balance of being a mother and a career woman, just like all of us are figuring out how to do too.

Noelle won the women’s Skeleton World Cup in 2004. However, when training at the 2005 Winter Olympics in Canada a bobsled went down the hill and failed to pull the brakes at the finish line, crashing straight into Noelle, breaking her right leg. Her dreams of becoming an Olympian were over–or so she thought.

As time went by, Noelle’s husband talked her into going back to the Olympics where she then won first place in her division of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Now, she devotes all her time to running her business and being a wife and mother to her family.

Noelle’s Turning Point

When Noelle was first injured, her world fell apart. So many questions were up in the air and she remembers lying in her hospital bed crying. The nurse walked in and noticed how she was upset and said, “Why are you crying?”

The nurse went on to explain that Noelle had two choices. She could either look back and be upset and frustrated about what just happened or she could just move forward. The nurse said, “Your leg is broken and your crying is not going to fix it.”

At first, Noelle was in shock that the nurse spoke to her like that (as we all probably would be), but then she started to think about it and knew the nurse was right.

If Noelle could take just one lesson away from her injury and all the results that came from it, it’s what this nurse taught her.

The whole point is to get better from where we are right now. If we are stuck in our past moments and in our doom and gloom, then it’s time to shift our perspective and change what you can.

When Noelle took on this perspective she developed many healthy habits and she loves these three steps on how to stay focused on meeting your goals despite surrounding distractions.

Three Steps on How to Stay Focused

Not sure how to stay focused when it gets hard? Read this post with Noelle Pikus Pace. www.iammichellegifford.com

Step 1: Simplify

One way to do this is to figure out what is stressing you out. A lot of times we don’t even know we have the stresses we do until we get it out. As women especially, we need to be open with ourselves and realize this is the best thing for us.

Step 2: Get it Out on Paper

Write down the things that stress you out. Noelle has done this certain technique as long as she can remember. Get out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left side, write down your fears, stresses, and anything holding you back. The point is to figure out why you feel this way.

On the right side, write down the solutions to your stresses. Once you get your stresses out of your head and onto paper you’ll feel the anxiety lift away from you making you feel lighter.

This writing technique is also helps you face your fears. Therefore, sometimes it may take time or you may get stuck on how to move forward. In cases like this, it’s important to reach out to a loved one or someone you look up to for help. For example, call a friend to babysit your kids while you get some things done instead of trying to do both things only half way.

Step 3: Start with the Wheel of Life

If you’re not sure where to start, start with the Wheel of Life. Draw a circle on a piece of paper and draw lines to make 8 slices, like a pizza. Label each section with the following:

  • Family
  • Spiritual
  • Emotional
  • Career
  • Physical
  • Finances
  • Personal Growth & Learning
  • Relationships

Reflect on each slice. Fill in each one as much as you think to show how well you’re doing in each area of your life.  See where you’re falling short. Then, you’ll know where to focus more time and energy on.
