Easy Template to Host Your Own Mastermind

Have you ever wanted to host a mastermind with just you and a few of your closest business friends? That’s what I got to do recently and I want to share with you how you can do it too. It’s simpler than you think and it can completely change your business. Here’s an easy template to host your own mastermind.

I put this blog post together because when I hosted the mastermind with my friends I had so many of you ask me how you could do this for yourself. Now, you can come to this blog post that has a written template (accompanied by my podcast episode explaining everything) to create a mastermind of your very own.

I had three ladies join my mastermind–Lisa Funk from Hand Letter Design, Janssen Bradshaw from Everyday Reading, and Rachel Nielson from 3in30 Podcast. There’s something special about getting with some of your closest business friends and getting different perspectives from people that you love and trust. Who would be the first three people you’d call to be a part of your mastermind?

Easy Template to Host Your Own Mastermind

You don’t have to plan this huge mastermind, go on a trip, or wait for someone to ask you to be a part of one. You can plan it yourself. Here are my guidelines and some steps I recommend for creating your mastermind template–these tips will help you create a mastermind of your dreams!

Mastermind Template Part 1: Guest List

My friend Lisa was the one who kicked off this mastermind. She invited three of her business friends that she talks to on a regular basis. The three of us she invited are all in a different industry, which I really like because we were able to come together with different perspectives and areas of expertise.

As you are looking around for people to join a mastermind with you, look for people who are different than you. This could look like people who are in a different industry and have different perspectives than you. That way everyone feels like they have something valuable to bring to the table.

However, don’t just choose people who have expertise. Pick people who you trust and are trusted by their community. This is important because these are people you will be sharing intimate details of your business with.

Also, if you’re wondering how many people to invite to be a part of a mastermind with you, we had four in our group and I felt like it was the perfect number. No one was off doing their own thing or felt lost. We all stuck together and contributed in some way. I feel like we could’ve gone up to six people at the most, but four felt really great.

Mastermind Template Part 2: Itinerary

Have someone from the group be in charge of the itinerary. I was the person in charge of it for my group. I created a calendar of events of what we would be doing over the next couple of days. This helped us all know what to expect and helped us stay on track while we were together. And of course, be flexible with the timeframe because if these are your business friends you are going to want to have some time to catch up! Plus, there are always things that pop up that you weren’t planning on, so leave a little wiggle room in that itinerary!

Vision

To start off the mastermind, my friend Lisa who is a masterful mindfulness coach, helped us walk through our vision for what we want for our businesses. This was a great place to start because it gave us an anchor point going forward. We had a vision of where we were going and why we wanted to go there.

When you think about your next goals for your business, having those anchored to what your actual vision is gives you a clear path on how to reach those goals–and makes it easier for you to reach them.

Hot Seat

After we discussed our vision, each of us took a turn getting in the “hot seat.” The hot seat is where you take a turn talking about where your business is, what you want it to be, and the help you need to get it there.

This process took a good chunk of time to complete. We did two hot seats and then took our lunch break. Then we completed one more hot seat. (I did my hot seat on the following day.) This is where we dug deep into where we want our business to go and we all brainstormed together on how to make those things happen.

Expert Hours

We devoted a good portion of our mastermind to “expert hours.” As mentioned earlier, we all came from different backgrounds and expertise, so we each took turns sharing our knowledge and answering questions.

This experience was HUGE for all of us! When setting up your mastermind, it’s so important to build a space where you can personally help each other in your businesses. This was a golden opportunity because each of us was surrounded by three other experts in something that we didn’t know as much about. We learned a ton and got a different perspective on how to improve our businesses.

Mastermind Template Part 3: Photoshoot

I highly recommend doing a photo shoot! We all need content constantly and this mastermind was the perfect time to batch-create some content. We hired a photographer and while one person was being photographed the other three of us were creating B roll for Instagram.

I got a ton of content that day and anytime I can knock out a bunch of content with my makeup done and looking good, I feel really, really happy. Plus, if you have a team that helps produce content, they will love it too. When you batch create content you are able to get ahead and your team gets ahead–it’s one of the best feelings!

Mastermind Template Part 4: Logistics

Since Lisa was the one who kicked off this mastermind for us, she took the lead on finding us an Airbnb and planning the meals. She booked the Airbnb for us and we all flew to Phoenix and stayed for three days and then headed back home!

Lisa bought breakfast stuff, so we ate breakfast in, we would eat lunch in as well which was usually leftovers and then we would eat dinner out. It wasn’t terribly expensive. We all paid for our own food and flights and split the cost of the photographer.

Mastermind Template Bonus Ideas

While my mastermind group stuck to the vision, hot seats, expert hours, and photoshoot, there are other things you can include in your mastermind that would be super beneficial! Here are some other ideas of what you could plan for your mastermind:

  • Business audit. Pick something you want your mastermind group to audit for you. This could be your Instagram account, a sales page on your website, an email funnel, etc. Show it to the group and have them pick apart how to make it even better for your audience and for reaching your goal.
  • Content planning session. This is where you’re all working together to figure out what content you should be creating. You could create a content plan, create actual video footage, audio recordings, etc.
  • Creation time. This mastermind is a great time to block off a couple of hours for creation time. Maybe you’ve had this project idea you’ve been wanting to work on and you finally have a couple of hours set apart to work on it. Use that designated time to get something really big done.
