How to Stay Healthy While Working from Home

Productivity, Work Life Balance

There are countless ways to stay healthy, both mentally and physically.  After many years of trying different things,  I’ve come to appreciate 8 ways to stay healthy while working from home. Juggling motherhood and working from home can often be a real challenge.  These tasks and routines I now implement regularly, help me be in control and ready for a successful day.

Success doesn’t come overnight, we all have different ways of working and accomplishing our tasks.  Whether you choose to follow all eight of these tips I have for you, or just a few, I am cheering you on and know that you can accomplish anything.

Sharing my top 8 tips of how I stay healthy while working from home.

3 Before 9

A few years ago I challenged myself and my followers to the #3before9 challenge. It’s where we exercise, get ready and check in with God all before 9 am.  If you want to be successful in life and business, I challenge you to do this too.   You will have better control of your mornings and be ready for the day ahead of you.

    1. Exercise: You will get a boost of energy, your focus will be improved, you’ll be in a better mood and it will reduce your stress.
    2. Get Dressed & Ready: Nothing gives me more confidence than getting dressed and being ready for the day ahead.
    3. Meditate and/or spend time with God: Taking time to connect with God brings clarity, peace, and direction.

Unless you’re new around here, you know that this is something that I still do everyday.  I can tell you that one of the reasons I run a 6 figure business with 5 kids at home is because of the #3before9 challenge.  I love this so much I can’t help but shout it from the rooftops, which is why you’ll hear me talk about it on my podcast, here on my blog and on Instagram.  I’m tell you, this is the real deal, so are you ready to take on the #3before9 challenge?

Plan Your Week

The second way I stay healthy when working from home is to plan my week. Every Sunday I take some time to sit down and plan out my week, for my business and my family.  When you take the time to plan your day, you are making day–to–day work decisions so much easier.  Think about the things you want to accomplish for work and the things you need to do with your family.  When you do this, you will have a plan that allows you to work when it’s time to work and be with your family when work is done.

Create a To-Do List

If you’re like me, you feel like you have a never-ending to-do list. Between business, church, and my family, there is always something that needs to be done!  Writing out the things that I need to do and then prioritizing them is always helpful.  Some days you may have meetings and deadlines that require you to push some of today’s to-do’s over to tomorrow, and that is ok! Be flexible and know that you are prioritizing what’s most important and doing that task first.

Have a Dedicated Work Space

When I was in college, I realized that I was so easily distracted by the mess in my room when it came time to study.  I had already removed myself from roommates and taken all the other distractions in my apartment out, but I didn’t think that the mess in my room would be another distraction until it was.

The same goes for me now, especially as a mom that works from home.  I have a dedicated space, in my bedroom, away from my kids, the laundry, dishes, and barking dog where I can close the door and focus on my work.  Did you catch that? A dedicated space in my bedroom, not in a legit office, but a dedicated space where I can work and successfully do all the things I need and want to do for my business.  Working from home can be busy and challenging, but it is manageable, that I can assure you is true!

Working from home can be busy and challenging, but it is manageable.

Stay Hydrated & Take a Lunch Break

Have a cup of water with you while you work to stay hydrated and allow your body some movement to keep the juices flowing. I always have a cup of water at my desk with me. It is also so important to take a real break for lunch.  You need to have a few minutes to eat and take care of yourself.  Close down your computer and step away from your work.  Not only is this good for your mental health, but you’ll be able to focus on what you’re eating and enjoy the meal too.

Maintain a Work-Life Balance

Have I spent mornings working hard on my business, but then take the afternoon off to go to the beach with my family? You bet! When you are doing all these things, you are maintaining a work-life balance.  I hope you understand that when you know how to treat yourself, you are doing the best thing to take care of yourself and your business.  Finding time to take care of yourself, have fun with your family, and work from home are all great things.

Take a Walk or Nap

If you are ever starting to feel tired or struggle to concentrate, take a few minutes to go for a little walk.  It doesn’t have to be long, just a 15 minute walk around the block will be enough to move your body and give your brain a break, allowing you to come back ready to get your work done!

Want to know what I do almost every day when I’m working? I take short naps! I 100% believe in the power of a short nap.  Research shows that a short nap, mid-afternoon, can make you more alert, reduce stress, improve learning and improve your health.  With that being said, listen to your body and either take a walk or a nap, depending on what your body needs.

Set Lower Expectations

Don’t be discouraged if your plans don’t always work out.  Let me tell you that your plans aren’t going to work out all the time and that is just fine.  More often than not, something will go differently than you had planned.  Take that as an opportunity to view the situation from a different perspective.  Quite a few of my most brilliant ideas for work have come because a plan I had went wrong and I had to look at it differently.  As I’ve said before, we can’t have the perfect business, a tidy house, obedient children, and dinner on the table every day of the week.  Lower your expectations and you will be surprised when you are able to do more than you originally thought.

Stay Healthy While Working from Home

I have noticed such a drastic change in my health and my work performance when I implement these things.  They’ve been so helpful for me that I’ve even created a few things to make this easier for you.  Start with trying my #3before9 challenge, it might just change your life! Also, you can use my Queen of Content Planner!  I use it daily to schedule out my days and create to-do lists.  I promise it will help you stay organized, get to work, and accomplish the things you want to get done.

When you have high hopes for being a healthy and successful business owner, while working from home, I hope you remember to implement these eight tips I’ve shared with you.  I know when you see all of them, they may seem like a lot.  But just take it one step at a time, little by little and you’ll be able to successfully work from home while staying healthy.
