Should I start a side business?

Having a side hustle is kind of “in” right now, isn’t it?  It makes complete sense.  Never before has it been so easy to start a business and grow a following. Social media has allowed stay-at-home moms, like me and you, to be at home with our kids and building a business all without leaving our home.  I love it!  Sure, there are some added challenges, but I’ve done it for the last 11 years and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I can hear you asking: is starting a side business the right thing for me?

Before you decide, let’s make a life assessment.  LIFE ASSESSMENT. Did I go too deep too fast?  Sorry, I tend to do that.  Let’s dive into your life.

What will you do with the money you get from your side business?

Do you need the money?  Starting a side business might be more of a necessity for you.  Making money won’t just add to the bottom line, it is part of the bottom line.  If this is you, don’t have any stress or guilt, accept it and know that there is no better time to be a mom who needs extra money.  There are so many options for you and you never have to leave the house.

Could you use the money?  When my husband was in school and residency, I had an Etsy shop and did a little photography and that money went to our Christmas presents.  Sure, they weren’t a necessity, but it sure made my life happier.

What good could you do with the money? My husband has a great job now and is able to cover the expenses of our household, so no, I don’t have to work.  But, we also have student loan debt that I can help pay down, college and missions to save for.  I also know that the more money I am able to make, the better I’m able to serve.

Don’t be scared of needing or wanting money.  There is more than enough to go around.  Money is a wonderful thing.

What time do you you have to give?

Because you are a mom, you might not feel like you have a lot of time to give, and you are absolutely right. you don’t.  I have built my businesses on 20 minute pockets of time and working nights and early mornings while my kids are asleep.  That might sound miserable to some, but I have absolutely loved what I do, so I’ve been willing to sacrifice that time because it charges me up.

Look at your schedule and see what you are doing that you could give up in order to build your business.  You will have to sacrifice for this and that is good.  Are you spending a lot of time watching tv or on social media?  Those are the first things I would cut out.  Sure, I watch tv and scroll Instagram, but I am very picky with what I choose to do and watch.

Which passions do you want to pursue?

The world is your oyster, my friend.  You can learn anything and be anything and it all starts with putting your search in Google.  I started learning photography by Googling.  I started my non-profit by Googling.  Please don’t tell me you can’t do something because you don’t know how.  There has never been a better time than now to learn (and if you have any questions, then you can head on over to Instagram and I will answer them for you.)

Which passions can I turn into a business?

If you can serve or create, you can make money.  Write a list of businesses that you could create.  Do you know how to sew?  Photography?  Bookkeeping? Virtual assistant?  Teaching English?  Make a long list and then if you can’t think of any more, here’s a list of ideas for you.

What if I don’t have a passion that will make me money?

If you can work with people, stick to deadlines and are willing to work, you can make money.  My good friend gets up early and teaches English online to Chinese children.  I have another friend that manages Pinterest for bloggers.  There is always a place for you.

If you want to build an actual business, maybe joining an MLM is for your.  I know what you’re thinking, MLM’s are icky and most people fail at them.  Well, that is only true if you make it true.  I’ve been a part of Maskcara for the last year and I have figured out how to do it all online without selling to friends.  Now, just twelve months later, I’m making a consistent income.  It does take consistent work, but it is a beautiful thing when it gets rolling.  (If you want to join my team, I’d love to teach you how to do this and you get all my courses for free.  Maskcara is an amazing company and our team is awesome.)
