What to Do When Social Media Platforms Make a Change

We are heading into the end of the year! How are you feeling, biz mama? I always get excited looking to the new year and planning what changes I want to make. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel exhausted when planning it all out. (Especially when you have plans and then Instagram adds a new feature!) But don’t worry, in this post I share with you what to do when social media platforms make a change.

I can’t believe all the changes Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest have made recently–and all relatively at the same time! It’s exciting to see the changes, but it can throw quite a wrench in your plans when it comes to your content strategy. It can also be nerve racking never knowing what’s coming next.

However, I don’t want you to obsess over this because it’s something out of your hands. What you CAN do is focus on how you will implement the new features and/or tools into your business when the time feels right.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself When Social Media Platforms Make a Change

Question #1: Does this update positively affect my business right now?

When Instagram released reels, I jumped on that pretty quickly. I think I created one the same day I heard about them. I did it quickly for two reasons:

  1. In the beginning, there’s less competition.
  2. Instagram rewards early adopters.

I could see the benefit of using reels for my business. Reels is the main way you are discovered by new people on Instagram. That’s because reels can be seen by people who do not follow you, unlike stories. If you’re looking for more reels ideas, click here to get 3 reels you could create today.

If you are still hesitant or have questions about how to make reels, text “Instagram” to 951.309.7885 to get my “Rock the Reels” challenge for free!

On the other hand, when the app Clubhouse was released, I downloaded that and tried it out right away. I didn’t really see the app positively affecting my business, so I decided to not invest my time and energy into it.

So, when a new feature is introduced, don’t jump on it before you consider the positive effects it will have on your business. This will save you a lot of time and unnecessary stress!

Question #2: Do I have space to implement this update into my business right now?

From personal experience, I can tell you’ve I’ve jumped into things that were new in detriment to things I already planned out for my business. Sometimes this is good and sometimes it’s bad. Haha!

It’s hard when you have a content plan and then a new feature like reels comes in and completely derails your whole life! Just remember this is not a race. Implement the new feature or update when it makes the most sense for your business.

Question #3: If I’m not implementing the update into my business right now, when will I revisit it?

I apply this question to other areas of my life as well. For example, when I was having kids, I would always check in to see if it was the right time to try having another baby. If it didn’t feel right, I’d check back in a few months later.

If you create a plan and set a date of when you will implement the new update, all of a sudden you feel less stressed and can stop worrying about how you haven’t used it yet. This especially helps because a lot of times we can obsess over things that we aren’t taking action on yet.

Don’t obsess over the update if you don’t have the time, space, or capacity to implement it.

I’m using this same strategy right now with YouTube. I’ve been wanting to do more YouTube videos for a while now. I just don’t have the capacity to do it right now. So, I set a plan to start working on it in January.

This is one of the best parts about owning a business! You get to decide and create what works best for you and your company. Even when it comes to what to do when social media platforms make a change.

Join Money Makers with Me!

OK, I have to tell you about my Money Makers coaching group. I completely revamped it to where you get coaching, courses, and a community so you don’t have to do business alone.

I know you could totally do your business alone. You could Google the heck out of things, keep your head down and work really hard. But I’m here to tell you (as someone who’s taken that route before) that is a long, lonely road, my friend.

Empowering women and creating community and opportunity for you to create a business built to last is what I live for. It’s so much more fun when you have other women alongside you where we can all learn and grow together.

My Money Makers group includes ALL of my courses! You usually have to purchase each one separately, but you get all of them if you join my group! There will be live coaching calls and training on new features and updates all throughout, so you’ll get support when you need it the most!

You can pay a little bit of money and get a TON of support, knowledge, and coaching that will fast track your business. If you join Money Makers before Nov. 4, you will get a discount!

When you check out, use code “INSIDERS” to get $50 off your overall purchase.

I can’t wait to see you there! You can also follow me on Instagram @iammichellegifford where I share tips and tricks to help make your business built to last.
