Your Instagram bio is the most important place on your Instagram account. Is it doing what it should do? I’ve audited hundreds of Instagram bios, and most are doing it wrong. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to get the perfect Instagram bio for your business. 

 

 

Your Instagram bio is where new people come and decide if they should follow you or not. Too many people are using their bio to talk about random things like ‘I like dogs and walks on the beach, I have 5 kids,’ etc. Yes, these are all true things about me but I do not include them in my bio. Why? Because no one cares. People care about how I serve them. 

If your bio does not clearly state how you serve your audience, then those new people will pass on by without following you. I do not want you to lose another follow because of a poorly written bio! Here’s what you need to know to get the perfect Instagram bio for your business.

Tutorial: Get the Perfect Instagram Bio for Your Business

 

Handle & Header

There are a couple of different names associated with your bio. Your first one is your Instagram handle. This is the name people would search for to find you on Instagram. Under your profile picture, you have another place for a header/title. This is where you should put your name and industry/niche. For example, mine says “Social Media Marketing | Michelle Gifford.” 

Your handle and header/title space are searchable so you want to put some keywords in there. These keywords are what will help people find you when they search for them on Instagram. If your name is in your Instagram handle you do not have to put your name in the header place, unless you are meta-verified. 

 

Profile Picture

Pick a professional photo that matches with your brand. I use Canva to remove the background of one of my brand photos and I replace it with one of my brand colors. This helps my picture stand out and it still looks professional and ties my Instagram brand together. Click HERE to get started with Canva. Paragraph Section

The first line of your paragraph section should say what problem you solve. There are many different ways to show this, but keep it simple and let it clearly state what you do to solve your audience’s problem.

The second line should say the people you are here to serve. Do you help moms, students, pet owners, etc.? Call them out and let them know you are showing up for them!

The third line is a spot where you can show your credibility. How many people have you helped so far? What accomplishments in your business have you had? What’s your background that qualifies you for this position? Whatever your credibility is, list it there on that third line. 

The fourth line is your call to action. This is where you tell your people what you want them to do. Some common call-to-actions would be joining your email list, buying a product, checking out your shop, etc. Whatever makes sense for your type of business, tell your people what you want them to do next. 

 

Bonus Instagram Bio Tip

I recommend hiding your account type. You do this by going to your Instagram settings and selecting the option to hide your account type. You do not need this to show on your bio and it actually takes up too much space, not leaving you enough room to add the things that actually matter on your bio.

Bio Example #2: Brittany Ratelle, a small business lawyer, has another killer example of an Instagram bio. (She’s also a killer lawyer!) Her tagline on her bio says “Small Business Lawyer” which is a keyword someone would search on Instagram, so now she has a better chance at popping up when someone searches for small business lawyers on Instagram.

Bio Example #3: Happy Happy Houseplant is a well-known Instagram account that teaches you all about taking care of your house plants. Their bio does a great job of pulling in house plant owners right away and you can feel the brand energy from the fun word choice they use in the bio.
